Local Artist Who attends Carer Wellbeing Groups donates Stunning Artwork

A unique piece of artwork is now on display at CPG’s Val Waterhouse Centre thanks to the generosity of a service user.

Talented artist, Alan Hopkins (73), painted a canvas of the exterior of the building  and then kindly donated the piece for staff and visitors to enjoy. Alan has been supported by the Carer Wellbeing Team for around 14 years and was nominated to cut the ribbon at the relaunch of Val Waterhouse Centre in September 2024. At the event he showed his portfolio of art to Paul Watson, Chair of Care Plus Group and Jane Miller, Chief Executive of Care Plus Group. They were awestruck by the amazing skills and technique displayed in Alan’s artwork and said they would love to see what Val Waterhouse Centre would look like in his style. Alan then promised that he would commit to painting Val Waterhouse Centre as his next project and spent the next few weeks visiting the centre and putting paint to canvas.

Alan has a unique approach to his artwork. With his photographic memory, he can accurately depict the  structure of the building when sketching out the shapes that make up the piece. This ability also helps him choose a a range of colours that add depth and texture to the finished image. His artwork has a modular-style assembly where he designs and paints certain elements separately, such as the vehicles out front, before placing them in the best possible position after completing the main painting..

When asked about the 3D elements of his painting, Alan noted, “They jump out at you”.

An official unveiling of the painting took place this week, where Jane Miller, Chief Executive for Care Plus Group, said:

“You’re very talented. We have got loads more wall space if you ever wish to put up more of your fantastic art. I’d like to thank you on behalf of all of us for this wonderful painting.”

Shortly after the speech, all those in attendance applauded the new arrival of the Val Waterhouse Painting which is now on display in the main stairwell for anyone attending services on the first floor.

We asked Alan about the donation of his work. He said:

“I did it as I like to be kind to people and it feels good to donate to charity. I am proud to have the painting in a place where everyone can see it.”
