‘A Listening Ear’ – Barry’s Story

Carers Wellbeing Worker, Nicola Harmon, supports Barry to care for his wife who lives with Multiple Sclerosis.

Barry, 84, has single-handedly cared for Julie for many years since she was diagnosed and, recently due to his own health concerns, Barry and Julie have accepted some support with Julie’s care needs. Julie now receives a care package with 2 daily calls and Barry said this support does help him.

When asked about this support, Barry said:

“I feel now that there are an awful lot of people in this world that are prepared to help us and you have helped us a lot.”

We asked Nicola about her experience supporting Barry, she said:

“Barry has always been very independent and supported Julie with all her care needs. He has also maintained their home and carried out all the DIY tasks and decorating himself to the highest of standards.

“Over the years of knowing Barry and Julie, I have built up a good rapport with them.  They know they can ring me for information, practical support and just a listening ear whenever they need to.”
