Award Shortlisting for Skin Integrity Team

Congratulations to the Skin Integrity Team who have been shortlisted in the Journal of Wound Care Awards 2023.

The team are finalists in the category of ‘Contribution to safe and effective wound care in a non-specialist setting’ for their ‘Basic Would Care Boxes’ project that was developed and rolled out to care homes during the Covid pandemic. Georgina McKay and Sarah Bagley will be representing the team at the awards.

During the pandemic, the service adapted to ensure they continued to support effective wound care, whilst also protecting staff and care home residents.

The Team put together and distributed ‘Basic Wound Care Boxes’ to all 41 local care homes to reduce the risk to vulnerable elderly residents. They also supported care staff in the care homes by delivering training on how to undertake the appropriate care for straightforward wounds (skin tears, minor cuts, abrasions) to make the wound safe.

The project aimed to reduce the number of health care professional visits and paramedic calls. Once immediate wound care had been given, referral to the most appropriate service was then advised for on-going care or assessment as required. This supported care homes to ensure a safe and effective approach to the numbers of external staff visiting to keep their residents and staff safe.

The winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony in London on 24th February – Good Luck to the Team!
