Today, we are sharing Kevin’s story as part of Learning Disability Week celebrating the voices and stories of people with learning disabilities.
“Let me introduce myself, my name is Kevin.
I have lived in the East Marsh of Grimsby all my life.
I love to travel on trains and buses to go to museums and explore new places.
I watch the National and local news and enjoy discussing current topics like sporting events, cricket & Wimbledon.
I like to make friends with people and will shake your hand. As I have a hidden disability, I can make loud noises unexpectedly and this can be a little scary if it’s the first time I have met you.
Some people can be unkind when I am out in the local community. They can call me horrible names which upsets and distresses me.
People who know me well say I am very intelligent and knowledgeable. They know me and say I am a lovely man who is very caring.
Next time you see someone like me in the community ask yourself “do you see me?”
