Michael’s HOPE Journey

At 73 years old, Michael has faced more physical challenges than most. Living with nine root nerve issues and plugs in his back, alongside three operations on his right knee, he was eventually told by doctors and consultants that there was nothing more they could offer apart from medication.

Rather than accepting this as the end of his options, Michael chose to take a different path.

Michael made a self-referral to the HOPE Centre in Grimsby and was invited for an initial assessment. Soon afterwards, he was given a course start date. From the very beginning, Michael says he enjoyed the course and felt supported every step of the way.

After just one or two sessions, Michael began to notice real improvements. His left leg, which he had previously been told had tendonitis, became more supple. Pain in his right knee reduced, and he found that his overall mobility was improving. These changes meant he was able to take less medication and no longer needed to rely on his back brace as much as he once had.

The benefits didn’t stop there. Michael noticed positive changes in his sleep, finding that he was resting better and able to relax more. He also felt happier overall and more confident in his day-to-day life.

Michael speaks highly of the HOPE team, describing them as “brilliant” and praising their patience, kindness and care. He says nothing is too much trouble and that the support he received made a genuine difference to his wellbeing.

Now, Michael’s wife has also joined the course. Together, they are experiencing the benefits, with Michael noting that he no longer falls or stumbles as much as he used to something he credits entirely to the guidance and encouragement of the HOPE staff.

The course runs twice a week for eight weeks, and participants are given a booklet containing photos of themselves completing the exercises, along with guidance to help them continue these at home. Michael was also supported with a new walking stick, further helping him maintain his independence.

Michael says he would recommend the HOPE service to anyone without hesitation. To him, the team are “second to none”, and his journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, positive change is always possible.
